Microsoft released Windows 11, version 26H2, on September 29, 2026. For eligible computers running 24H2 or 25H2, it uses a small enablement package. Before updating, check your device’s offer in Windows Update, protect your files and review known compatibility issues.

What Microsoft announced

Microsoft’s 26H2 availability announcement describes a low-disruption annual feature update. Versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share a servicing foundation, and many components arrive through monthly updates before a feature update enables them.

A new version number does not mean every audio, gaming or File Explorer problem has a new universal fix. Read the release note for the exact installed update and investigate your particular symptoms. This guide does not claim a rewritten USB audio driver, a measured performance gain or a fixed installation time.

How the update is delivered

On eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices, the enablement-package path can involve a small download and a restart rather than a full operating-system installation. Download size and completion time still depend on the starting version, pending updates and the computer.

Check Settings > Windows Update for the offer. Microsoft uses a controlled rollout and can place safeguards on devices with known compatibility problems. If the update is not offered, do not assume your computer is broken or bypass a hold simply to get the newest version sooner.

Check support and compatibility

The official release table lists Home and Pro support for 26H2 through October 10, 2028. It also lists 24H2 Home and Pro reaching the end of updates on October 13, 2026. Enterprise and Education dates differ, so check both the version and edition.

As of October 10, 2026, it is incorrect to tell all Windows 11 22H2 or 23H2 users that they can keep receiving security updates for several months. Home and Pro support for those versions has already ended. If you manage a business computer, consult your IT administrator before changing its update policy.

Review Microsoft’s release-health hub and your hardware or software vendor’s guidance when you depend on specialist applications, peripherals or accessibility tools. Running an earlier version of Windows 11 does not guarantee that every later release will work without issues.

Prepare your computer

  • Back up important files.Use an independent backup and check that the files can be opened. Sync alone does not replace a recovery plan for accidental deletion or damaged files.
  • Save recovery information.Confirm that you can access the recovery key for any encrypted drive before changing the operating system or firmware.
  • Leave time and power available.Connect a laptop to power, check available storage and avoid starting immediately before important work.
  • Check critical software and devices. For a business rollout, test a representative machine first. Obtain driver and firmware updates from Windows Update or the device manufacturer.
  • Record the starting point.Note your Windows version, edition and any existing errors. That helps distinguish a new issue from one that was already present.

If the update causes trouble

Record the exact error and installed update, then follow the relevant Microsoft guidance. A percentage where installation stops does not, by itself, diagnose disk space, and a slow boot does not prove that a chipset driver is at fault.

Windows may offer a rollback under Settings > System > Recovery after a feature upgrade. Availability is limited and depends on the upgrade path and retained recovery files; do not assume a rollback is always possible. Keep a backup even when a recovery option is shown.

For an audio, network or printer issue, check the device’s status and the vendor’s driver guidance before removing drivers or resetting settings. Do not download unofficial driver bundles or repeatedly force an update past a compatibility safeguard.

Frequently asked questions

Did Windows 11 26H2 arrive in 2024?

No. Microsoft lists September 29, 2026 as its availability date. Windows 11 24H2 was the 2024 release.

Is it a 4–6 GB download for everyone?

No fixed size applies to every computer. Microsoft describes a small enablement package for eligible devices on 24H2 or 25H2; other starting conditions can require more work.

Will it fix my USB audio or gaming problem?

That cannot be promised from the version name alone. Check the exact update’s release notes and troubleshoot the affected hardware or application.

Should I force the update if it is not offered?

Check your current support status and official compatibility guidance first. A safeguard hold can indicate a known problem. For a managed work computer, follow your organization’s update plan.
